Ravenna Kitchen

This couple had already embarked on a complete kitchen remodel when they called. Their cabinet company had promised full design services, they had found a contractor they liked and trusted, and they had a brand-new professional stove sitting in their basement. However, once they had committed to their cabinet purchase, the "full design services" evaporated. Their kitchen was scheduled for demolition in two weeks, the new cabinets were coming in six weeks, and they were told to choose and specify countertops, flooring, back splashes, sink fixtures, cabinet hardware and paint.

Since the cabinets were a given, we started with the counters, choosing a rich, "leather" finished granite the color of black coffee. We went on to the floor and backsplashes, finding a stone-like porcelain tile into which we inserted smaller decorative tiles. At this point, the kitchen was still fairly neutral, though no longer bland. My clients, who wanted to display a ceramic platter they found in Italy, agreed to pick their paint color from it -- and, happily, went with a bold Tuscan red. Enlarge & view additional images
